Nuclear imaging techniques have gained wide acceptance in recent years for monitoring response to cancer therapy at the molecular level. Nuclear imaging using specific probes allows non-invasive, longitudinal assessment of biological processes, such as tumour metabolism, cell proliferation, angiogenesis, hypoxia and receptor dynamics. The Nuclear Imaging facility provides preclinical PET/MR imaging support to a range of in vivo research projects.

PET/MR imaging has achieved remarkable momentum in the areas of preclinical research and translational imaging. This novel technology utilises the functional imaging capabilities offered by both PET and MR modalities, using the MR data as anatomic information amended by functional data from PET. At present, PET/MR is probably the most strongly emerging imaging platform in cancer research and it is anticipated that over the next few years, it will also show its potential for providing novel options in critical clinical diagnosis.
