IntroductionThe Beatson International Cancer Conference series is designed to be a relaxed and friendly meeting where delegates and invited speakers have a chance to interact on both a scientific and social basis. We encourage the speakers to stay for the duration of the conference to ensure this interaction.
Once again, the conference will be held at Glasgow University, as the venue proved to be so successful last year. There are several events arranged to give you a taste of the culture and warmth of the West of Scotland and the scientific content of the conference is guaranteed to stimulate.

Aims of the conferenceTumours consist of malignant, transformed 'tumour cells', but also many other cell types (including fibroblasts, immune cells and a blood supply) and the extracellular matrix surrounding the tumour cells is markedly altered. These additional tumour components, which are termed the 'tumour stroma' are now established to dictate the properties of a cancer, and to determine the progression of the disease. Because of this, much effort is being put into developing strategies to target the 'tumour stroma' with drugs in order to develop anti-cancer therapies. This meeting will highlight recent exciting research into the role played by the tumour stroma in cancer progression and how agents may be developed to treat the disease by targeting tumour associated cells, such as immune cells and fibroblasts, the tumour vasculature and the tumour extracellular matrix.
