Interns

Each year, we host around 25 interns in our research groups (usually over the summer period), a number of whom go on to PhD positions here or elsewhere. This is an opportunity for bright undergraduate and masters students considering a career in cancer research to find out what it is like to work in state-of-the-art labs alongside world-class scientists. Our research groups study a wide range of topics related to the cell biology of cancer and use a number of different techniques in their work, and thus provide a very valuable training experience for students.

To apply, please contact individual group heads (a maximum of two or three only) with a copy of your CV, the name/contact details of one academic referee and a brief explanation of why you particularly want to work in their research group. You should also give an idea of when/for how long you would like to work in the lab, typically internships are for 2-3 months.

To be eligible to apply, you should be an undergraduate or masters student studying a life sciences subject with a strong interest in cancer research and the possibility of doing a PhD in the future. You should have excellent grades and at least some lab experience already.

Occasionally, we are able provide a small amount of funding for these posts but in general they are unpaid positions. Students are also welcome to contact group heads if they have or wish to apply for funding from their university (for example, Erasmus) or for a vacation scholarships, for example:

BBSRC - Research Experience Placements
Biochemical Society - Summer Vacation Studentships
British Pharmacological Society - Vacation Studentships
British Society for Cell Biology - Summer Studentship
Carnegie Scholarships - Undergraduate Vacation Scholarships
Genetics Society Genes and Development - Summer Studentships
Royal Microscopical Society - Summer Studentships
University of Glasgow - Head of College Scholars List Scheme
Wellcome Trust - Biomedical Vacation Scholarships
