The Beatson Institute is supported by an IT department that provides a range of support services, including server support, hardware cover, software assistance, graphic support as well as help in hardware selection and user training.
There are over two hundred PCs on site with total available storage of
over 25Tb, with almost the same amount to be installed again in the
coming year. All PCs are built with a common desktop environment,
around Windows XP and Office XP and are actively managed and upgraded
to ensure the best possible working environment. Central applications
are being migrated from stand alone PC based applications to web
enabled applications providing cross platform support for PCs,
Macintosh and UNIX based systems.
The service links with the Glasgow University JANET network including
emails and internet access. A modern video conferencing facility is
available and audiovisual support services for large conferences have
been provided at a number of international venues for both the
Institute and Cancer Research UK.

The Library Service has recently completed a migration from a physical paper based library to a virtual E-library. A small collection of ‘core’ biomedical journals is kept in print, together with technical and reference books
Holdings are supplemented by inter-library loans from other local,
regional and national libraries including Cancer Research UK libraries.
Beatson Library holdings are uploaded into PubMed LinkOut, enabling
Beatson staff to identify relevant articles from PubMed they can access
immediately.
Current awareness services including table of contents alerts and
monthly searches of literature databases such as Medline, Embase and
ISI’s Web of Science.
