The Beatson Institute is supported by an IT department that provides a range of services, including server support, hardware cover, an on-site helpdesk providing both repair and software assistance, as well as help in hardware selection and user training.
There are over 400 PCs on site, comprising a mixture of Windows computers, Apple Macs and Linux machines, wih central authentication, central file storage and print sharing. The servers provide in excess of 750 TB of online storage with regular backups. All PCs are built with a common desktop environment, around Windows or Mac OS X and Microsoft Office and are actively managed and upgraded to ensure the best possible working environment.
The service links with the Glasgow University JANET network including emails and internet access. A modern video conferencing facility is available and audiovisual support services for large conferences have been provided at a number of international venues for both the Institute and Cancer Research UK.
