Laboratory Services

Central Services
This service performs a wide range of duties that are essential for the support of the research groups across the site.

Services performed include cleaning and sterilisation of reusable laboratory supplies, liquid/solid media production and certain aspects of laboratory maintenance of items such as centrifuge rotors, X-Ray processors, reverse osmosis water systems, vacuum pumps, fume cupboards, balances and pH meters.

The stocking of the tissue culture suites and laboratory waste collections are performed daily.

Laboratory Management
Laboratory ManagementLaboratory Management is responsible for providing advice and information to scientists on health and safety, particularly on how to carry out risk assessments and on appropriate control measures.

A further major function of Laboratory Management is the overseeing of shared equipment servicing, replacement and obtaining new equipment to facilitate the needs of researchers. Advising and assisting in equipping the new groups, while marking time and readjusting required purchases of any new equipment for our new building continues to be a major task.

Building Facilities
Building facilities are responsible for all aspects related to the upkeep and smooth operation of Building Facilitiesthe building.  This includes security, cleaning, catering, mechanical and electrical services, alterations and refurbishment, and health and safety legislation relating to premises. In addition, they perform a building liaison role in new build projects and major refurbishments associated with the Institute

The Workshop Engineer provides an in-house service for small equipment repairs and apparatus and can manufacture, modify or repair other items as required.

Stores
Stores now have four staff members. Items can be withdrawn from stores on a self-service basis with automatic cost centre allocation via swipe card.

A porter service is run to deliver external orders to the researchers, while any outgoing samples or materials are processed by stores for courier collection.

Highly competitive rates from suppliers are maintained and contracts regularly reviewed. A new intranet system has been developed for stock delivery and level control. This will assist with running an efficient service for our scientific staff.
