Gareth Inman - Growth Factor Signalling

Introduction

Gareth InmanIntroduction TGF-β is a pleiotropic cytokine that can act as both a tumour suppressor and a tumour promoter in a context dependent manner. It induces growth arrest and apoptosis in normal epithelia, however during their development solid tumours frequently modulate their response to TGF-β and utilise this cytokine as a promoter of motility, survival, invasion, vascularisation, metastasis and/or immunosuppression.

We are studying the spatial, temporal and tissue specific regulation of TGF-β signal transduction pathways to understand how TGF-β acts as a tumour suppressor and a tumour promoter. Our ultimate goals are to develop therapeutics that selectively target the pro-oncogenic actions of TGF-β whilst maintaining its important normal physiological functions, and to identify patient selection criteria for the use of these therapeutics.
